Sanskrit Shloka: 2.12
न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः।
न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम् ॥2.12॥
Meaning in English:
Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.
Meaning in Hindi:
न तो ऐसा कभी हुआ है कि मैं नहीं था, न तुम थे, और न ही ये राजा लोग थे; और आगे भी हम सभी कभी भी नहीं रहेंगे — ऐसा भी नहीं होगा।
Explanation in English:
In this verse, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that the soul (self) is eternal.
• Krishna, Arjuna, and all the warriors (janādhipāḥ) have always existed in some form and will continue to exist even after death.
• This is a clear statement about the immortality of the soul.
• The body changes and perishes, but the true self (ātman) is never born and never dies.
• Krishna is also indicating the personal individuality of souls, even in spiritual existence — showing that we are eternal beings with identity.
This teaching helps Arjuna see that killing the body in war does not destroy the true self of anyone.
Explanation in Hindi:
इस श्लोक में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन को आत्मा की नित्य और अविनाशी प्रकृति समझा रहे हैं:
• भगवान कहते हैं: “हे अर्जुन! न तो ऐसा कोई समय था जब मैं नहीं था, न तुम थे और न ही ये राजा थे।”
• अर्थात हम सभी पहले भी थे, अभी भी हैं और आगे भी रहेंगे।
• यहाँ श्रीकृष्ण यह बता रहे हैं कि आत्मा कभी भी समाप्त नहीं होती, वह अनादि (जिसका कोई आदि नहीं) और अनंत (जिसका कोई अंत नहीं) है।
• यह शरीर नष्ट होता है, पर आत्मा शाश्वत (eternal) है।
इसलिए, अर्जुन का यह सोचना कि वह युद्ध करके इन लोगों की "हत्या" कर देगा — गलत है, क्योंकि कोई भी आत्मा मारी नहीं जा सकती।
भावार्थ (Essence):
• यह श्लोक आत्मा की शाश्वतता (eternity) और व्यक्तित्व की निरंतरता (individual eternal existence) को स्पष्ट करता है।
• श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन को यह बोध कराना चाहते हैं कि मृत्यु केवल शरीर की होती है, आत्मा की नहीं।
• इसलिए, धर्म के लिए युद्ध करना कोई पाप नहीं है
