Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 Shloka 42

Sanskrit Shloka 1.42:

Transliteration:
Saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṁ kulasya ca।
Patanti pitaro hyeṣāṁ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ. ।।1.142।।

Translation:
"Such a mixture of unwanted progeny (varna-sankara) leads the family and its destroyers to hell. Deprived of the offerings of rice and water, the ancestors (pitris) of such families fall (from their spiritual position)."

Hindi Translation:

Explanation:
Arjuna expresses his fear that the breakdown of family structures caused by war will lead to varna-sankara (unregulated progeny), which in turn results in spiritual and social harm. The destruction of family traditions disrupts sacred rituals, such as the pinda (food offerings) and udaka kriya (water libations), which are essential in Hindu tradition to honor and support departed ancestors (pitris).
Without these rituals, Arjuna believes that the ancestors will suffer, causing further spiritual degradation for the entire family lineage. Additionally, those responsible for destroying the family (kulaghnas) will incur great sin, leading them to hellish consequences.
This verse reflects Arjuna’s deep concern for both worldly and spiritual harmony and underscores his reluctance to engage in actions that could destabilize society and harm his ancestors’ spiritual welfare.

Hindi Explanation:
